Hopefully a little shorter than the setting history, here's all the important information about the actual character!

oh god it's not shorter at all is it

Basic Information - Who The Eff Is This:

Name: Nicholas "Reverie" Martel
Age: 19
Gender: Male

Background - How He Got Here:

Born the son of a gun-for-hire with a heart of gold and a military engineer in one of Zen Dynamics various private military divisions shortly after their takeover, his childhood was largely uneventful if perhaps somewhat lonely at times. His family was well enough off thanks to his parents respective careers to at least avoid living on the streets or in the worst of the slums they were far from wealthy with their jobs often leaving him alone for extended periods of time. There's quite a story behind how his parents met, but... that's a tale for another time.

Nonetheless when he entered the picture it forced his mother to go somewhat more legit than a hired mercenary and she joined one of Zen Dynamics' military contractor divisions alongside his father, becoming known as something of a Nightmare Hunter in her own right. And this did come with a few perks even if it meant his parents were somewhat on the absent side, along with having to move a few times when ghosts from his mothers past started knocking. Eventually though they settled down, although even into his teenage years his parents would still often leave him alone for days if not sometimes weeks at a time as various deployments and jobs both large and small took their time, it's never something he held against them although it did contribute to an inner desire to wander, to do more than sit in a quiet apartment when he wasn't at school. And despite the occasionally shady nature of his mothers job, part of him always admired her willingness to go out of her way to help others, even when it risked her everything, winding up in the hospital on more than one occasion due to having gotten involved in a battle with Nightmares.

The biggest turning point for him though was the day the First Mahou awoke, he was as wide-eyed as anybody else at the idea of these incredible heroes stepping forth to fight monsters and rescue people, a part of him wishing deep down he had power like that so he could also go and make a difference. Not long after, his wish was granted although the circumstances weren't what he'd pictured when he was grabbed off the street by a group of masked men, part of a criminal organization his mother had wronged in the past sought to ransom him off. It was only upon negotiations falling through and an ill-fated attempt to dispose of him that they found themselves dealing with a newly awakened Mahou, something they weren't even remotely prepared to handle.

This rattled him pretty badly, even though he still wanted to take his newly gained powers and go help other Mahou out against Nightmares having lived a near-death experience left him shaken, uncertain if a life of fighting was what he really wanted. Fortunately, the powers he'd been gifted with made him more than capable of aiding the frail and ill, the wounded and the dying and it was in that he found what would become his true calling. Over the next few years he realized a number of things, for one the idea of living in the spotlight was something he wanted little of, aware of how remarkably petty the drama and in-fighting could get between various Mahou all looking to be the glorious hero of the moment. For two, he had remarkably little patience for the way society seemed keen on treating so very many people, having always sort of known but never really seen so closely how people could be awful to each other at the drop of a hat. And third, the idea of going all fire-and-brimstone revolutionary didn't especially appeal to him either though he knew such groups certainly existed. To help people by burning it all down didn't seem like a terribly sensible idea, the people who would be hurt and killed in the chaos...

He just wasn't that interested in fighting. At least, not for the reasons most of the better known Mahou seemed to be, battles were certainly exciting affairs and he'd always idolized the brave heroes who took down Nightmares when he was younger! But the aftermath and the politics surrounding it all... he had little interest in. So he kept more to himself and in the shadows, focusing his efforts on aiding those he could rather than seeking out battles and glory. Not to say he never got into any fights, calling a Nightmare "not his problem" would have been incredibly self centered and his determination to help those regardless of if others felt they deserved it or not saw him confronting other Mahou on an occasion or two... but by and large he preferred the more support-oriented role he'd chosen for himself, rather than the one to lead the charge. And even if he didn't have the power to singlehandedly change the world, or magically remake the world into a less terrible place, this didn't strike him as a reasonable excuse to give up on helping people. Yes, people often sucked a great deal. They could do terrible things to each other for little or no reason with many of those in charge seemingly uncaring as to the plight of others, but to him that just made it all the more important to do what he did for whomever he could.

And besides, even if he can't save the world, if he saves someone's life or that of a loved one then hasn't he saved their world? And at the end of the day that's a good enough reason to drive him onwards.

Powers And Abilities - What Makes A Mahou Tick:

Self Defense - Holy Shit The Healer's Got A Mean Right Hook:

Perhaps calling it "martial arts" would be implying something a little too fancy, but while hardly a highly trained martial artist Reverie does have a solid grasp of self defense both armed and unarmed, a side effect of having an ex-mercenary for a mother and a military man for a father. No way they were going to let him grow up in this world without some idea of how to protect himself, even if he'd prefer to not run around breaking faces for a career.

Though throwing a punch or fighting with a baton is what he has the most experience with, he's got an idea of how to handle a firearm (seriously his mother owns like twelve) though his skill would fall short of any sort of professional soldier. Nonetheless, he can at least handle one without shooting himself in the foot.

Magic - The Mana Drive:

At its most fundamental the power that drives every single Mahou is Hope. Some call it willpower, some call it just being driven, but at the end of the day it's the refusal to simply believe things can't be better than they are that. This fuels them, being converted into actual tangible magical energy which they are then capable of wielding as easily as most people simply move a limb or breathe. Although for most people magic is a difficult force to control, requiring complex rituals and intense focus for a Mahou it's almost like an extra set of muscles, something every bit as natural as any physical part of their body and something that is essentially a fundamental part of who and what they are. For the sake of having something to call the metaphysical engine that drives this a few of the early Mahou took to referring to it as the Mana Drive and the name simply stuck.

All Mahou naturally have a few advantages thanks to this, for one they're all just ever so slightly more robust than the average person thanks to the underlying power within them and they're additionally capable of using small amounts of magical energy even without being transformed. But the really interesting stuff comes from-

Transforming - Damn Straight I Look Good:

This would be a pretty crappy Magical Girl setting without transformations, so here they are. Activating their Mana Drive allows a Mahou to transform, fully awakening the power within themselves and flooding their body with magical power along with a unique, snazzy new wardrobe that seems for all the world like it was custom tailored for them. Nobody actually knows why this includes a magical costume change and this has been the source of sometimes intense debate, is it something that reflects the inner nature of the person? Is there some otherworldly entity assigning these to people? Is it all just a government conspiracy and they're engineered to be flashy and attention-grabbing to fit the general public perception of a bunch of magical heroes? Who knows!

But what's important is that in their transformed state Mahou boast dramatically increased physical abilities, becoming much more difficult to kill than the average human and capable of seemingly logic-defying feats of physical prowess, something that effectively allows them to close the gap between Human and Nightmare in addition to fully unlocking their ability to wield magic. That said, they aren't invincible, merely tough. Additionally most Mahou possess abilities unique to themselves or others that can otherwise be learned through experience and/or training.

Magical Weapons - Having Purples Built Into Your Class:

The signature skill of the First Mahou was actually Weapon Manifestation, but this had a striking enough impact on all who followed that it quickly became something most Mahou tried to learn how to do for themselves, making it one of the few abilities to be almost universally used albeit with varying degrees of success and effectiveness, and it's one Reverie happens to be fairly handy at. There's a few quirks to this though, it isn't quite as simple as having some magical weapon somewhere that can be summoned to his side, it's actually using his magical energy to manifest one out of sheer power which has a few advantages and disadvantages. For one, it does make it quite hard to actually disarm him, so long as he has access to his magic he is theoretically armed. For two, this allows a certain degree of customization with the desired weapon, or even summoning a different type altogether should the situation call for it. For three, these weapons can simply be made more powerful by funneling more magical power into them, allowing for a fair bit of control over their effectiveness.

But this comes with drawbacks. The biggest one is that manifesting a weapon out of sheer energy actually takes quite a bit of juice in addition to effectively having an "upkeep" to maintain its physical form, they're not free to create nor do they cost nothing to maintain once created. Secondly, they're still tied pretty specifically to the Mahou who manifested it. Using this power to arm other people is hypothetically possible, but could become excessively draining extremely quickly as it's not an ability meant to create a large scale of arms at all, and while in theory the magical drain could be shuffled off onto whomever the weapon is handed to, in all likelyhood the strain would prove fatal before long to somebody with no inherent magic of their own.

On top of that they don't exactly come with instruction manuals, just because Reverie can manifest a wide range of weapons doesn't actually make him good with them. Though quite capable with a blade, if asked to provide a demonstration of expert archery he would likely be found somewhat wanting in comparison. Just because you can do something with magic doesn't always mean you should. Additionally though the weapons might be magical in nature, heavy use against armored targets or otherwise putting the weapons through major physical abuse does put extra strain on them and therefore draws more energy from the wielder unless they allow the weapon to dissipate or shatter under the strain.

For the record, Reverie's weapon of choice is a collapsible baton! Because it's what he was familiar with for self defense prior to becoming a Mahou. and because they're really cool and seriously don't get enough love in fiction

Energy Projection - Not Actually A Very Good Idea:

More of a brief mention but something still worth clarifying, pretty much any Mahou is capable of simply mustering up the magic flowing through them and turning into a ball or focused ray of raw, unstable magic which can then be launched at someone or something they don't very much like. This is typically only seen by inexperienced or desperate Mahou though as in practice this consumes an awful lot of energy for a blast that ultimately isn't very efficient. But hey, if you need to punch somebody on the other side of the room with your soul right this very moment it can occasionally be worth it. Reverie rarely makes use of this one.

Biomancy - This Is Why You Don't Fuck With The Healer:

So let's get to what he does do, the power that allows him to heal in the first place and the inherent ability granted to him when his magic first awoke. The power of Biomancy, the ability to magically influence and control biological matter. There's many potential sub-uses for this ability, so let's get into them shall we?

Though the most obvious of course would be the ability to heal injuries both on his person and on others. Knitting flesh and mending bones, it isn't an instantaneous process but it is effective, able to dramatically shorten the recovery time of otherwise severe injuries that would cripple or even kill. More severe injuries may require multiple treatments, but with enough focus and time there isn't much he can't fix. This comes in two flavors, Healing and Regeneration. Simple Healing is a matter of augmenting a persons natural capacity for recovery and is simple and efficient, allowing for much shorter recovery periods and for a body to put itself back together in a mostly natural way, simply turbocharged by his magic. Full blown Regeneration is the ability to heal damage that otherwise a body would not have the ability to recover from in the first place and can turn back even gruesome injuries, but is intensely draining on Reverie's magic and must be done slowly and with focus lest the injury be repaired improperly, it isn't as simple as snapping his fingers and somebody is good as new.

Furthermore this very same power works in similar fashion against things such as infections, poisons or toxins as well as a pretty hefty range of illnesses. Due to everyone's body being slightly different this isn't always quick, much as with physical healing it takes time and focus to pull it off correctly.

Both of these can be used on himself consciously in an emergency, though as a side effect of this being his natural power his body is in a constant state of recovering more quickly than normal, an effect that intensifies when under duress such as when in combat. This does have the slight side effect of still consuming energy, albeit less than when he heals other people due to it being his own body. Additionally this effect is increased quite dramatically while transformed while being more efficient but much slower while not transformed.

That's all well and good and is generally about as much as he prefers to let most people know about his powers, but the thing about magic is it often rewards creativity. Many abilities can be used in unexpected ways if you put your mind to it, and he's figured out how to do precisely that. The flip side of Biomancy is that for all the things he can fix, he can also unfix.

This typically doesn't demand nearly as much precision as putting somebody back together, but there's nothing stopping him from commanding biological matter to just start dying or failing entirely, sloughing away or leaving surprisingly horrific wounds that are unlikely to recover naturally. Being able to infuse this very same necrotic power into his weapon is an especially mean technique, although one he's been hesitant to actually use on another person for reasons that should well be obvious. Push come to shove though, it's a surprisingly nasty card to have up his sleeve in a pitched battle.

Additionally both types of Biomancy can be projected at people through some form of energy projection but this does carry drawbacks, not the least of which being that it's much less efficient than doing it by hand via physical contact. Additionally given the way most Biomancy tends to work, a brief second of contact is unlikely to do a whole lot unless an excessive amount of energy is put into it to say nothing of the risk of missing. In a pinch however he is capable of focusing these abilities into a projectile form and attempting to send them long distance, creating rays of healing or necrotic energy. He's hoping he never actually has to hit somebody with the latter.

With more practice and time there's other ways Biomancy can theoretically be wielded, but thus far these have been the primary uses he's found for the ability.

Strain - Whoops, Guess I Should Have Stopped An Hour Ago:

A short section here, but one that's important all the same. Though a Mahou's reserve of energy is hypothetically limitless so long as they remain driven that doesn't mean they can fight forever. Excessive and prolonged use of magical energy builds up something Mahou have come to call Strain, sort of a wearing of the metaphysical systems through which magic flows through their body. It begins as merely fatigue and discomfort but if pushed, this quickly turns into a weakening of their ability to use magic until it recovers, a form of stress damage essentially. In Reverie's case this damage cannot be healed magically, so the nature of his power doesn't allow him to cheat the system.

And while these limits can be pushed in some cases, this almost always comes with a cost down the line. Mahou are tough, but not invincible and this goes for their Mana Drive as well.

Overdrive - Safety Warnings What Safety Warnings:

And lastly we come to this. Ordinarily the Mana Drive has what you could call a safety system of sorts, a system that regulates the flow of power through a Mahou's body and keeps it from spiraling out of control, but in moments of extreme emotional duress it is possible to disable this safety altogether, allowing a Mahou's power to completely overflow their system and pushing their strength far beyond its normal limitations. This even appears to be an intentional ability as for those who've used it, this often comes paired with an even fancier costume change to go with the major increase in overall power but it carries major risks. A Mahou's Mana Drive isn't meant to keep up with that level of abuse for very long and it's incredibly easy to overstrain oneself fighting like this for very long, to say nothing of how easy it is to do very real long term damage due to energy levels not falling off when the body becomes too strained.

In extreme cases it's even possible for a Mahou to permanently burn out their ability to use magic or even lose their life altogether. Limits can be bent, even broken in an emergency, but ultimately these limits exist for a reason and there's often a price to pay for ignoring them.

And now for the vastly more wordy version of the setting, in this post we'll go into the setting itself and how we got to present time! But first, here's a short list of Relevant Names!

Country This Shit Went Down In: Denestvia
Most Important Corporation Involved: Zen Dynamics

Before Magic - How'd This Start Anyways:

The full story how the various Mega Corporations rose to such power is a long, complicated tale for another time, all one really needs to know is that they did, obtaining vast power of both financial and military means that allowed them to largely take over, most governments being reduced to little more than puppet states assuming you were lucky enough to live some place that even still pretended to have one. After a while, the Mega Corps went as far as to set off and start building their own cities for various purposes, the most powerful of them becoming effectively sovereign entities in their own right. The most powerful of which and arguably the only one to rightfully call themselves a "Giga" Corporation was Zen Dynamics, a merging of one of the most powerful arms manufacturers and an equally powerful private military contractor at a point in time when both wielded a great deal of political power due to a combination of financial interests, political ties and just plain being terrifyingly powerful. This gave them the power they needed to effectively usurp the existing government of Denestvia, the country they were originally based out of, paving the way for the "glorious" corporate revolution that saw a large scale transfer of general authority from the proper government to privately controlled corporate entities, and freed from restrictive oversight and laws keeping them in check, technology advanced rapidly to a state considerably beyond that of our world. Aided however slightly by Zen Dynamics itself being a power hungry but ultimately not evil entity, with little interest in oppressing and tormenting for its own sake or anything quite so mustache-twirlingly evil. That said the result was still a far cry from anything one would call a "utopia", nor was the transition of power exactly a peaceful one.

When Zen Dynamics led the charge, stating that they would sweep away the old corrupt governments that so often treated their own citizens as little more than an annoyance, a nuisance or simply a resource to be exploited, not everybody was exactly on board with this and when legal measures to oppose this were exhausted the use of force entered the picture. What ensued next was... messy, as with all other measures exhausted the Dnestvian government took to simply using force, to which the newly born Zen Dynamics responded with everything they had. The resulting armed conflict for control of the country was an ugly affair, effectively an all out revolution that stretched resources on both sides thin and resulted in no small amount of general societal upheaval. But the finer details of the war aren't especially important, what is important was a development during the war that would prove to be a turning point for history itself.

The discovery of an ancient power many once called "Magic".

The Rediscovery Of Magic - Dawn Of A New Age:

Important Name: Magi = Those who study and wield magic!

That magic was something which existed thousands of years ago was not by itself a revelation, at least not entirely. There were plenty of tales of seemingly impossible feats having been preformed in ancient times, as well as evidence scattered here and there of accomplishments that simply should not have been possible at the time creating plenty of debate as to if such a power really did exist and if so, what happened to it and what the full extent of it even was. Nobody's entirely sure how exactly The Rediscovery actually happened though if the official version of events is to be believed, an especially large blast caused by a bunker-piercing bomb being misfired out over the desert uncovered an unexpectedly large ruin of what appeared to once be an ancient temple complex, built under the ground and dedicated to the study of magic. It wasn't long before an expedition was sent in to explore it, initially to see if the location would serve as a useful base only to discover something infinitely more important.

For within this temple was bar none the most complete set of instructions for instructing a beginner in the arts of magic yet recovered, and far moreso than simply another fairy tale these proved cohesive enough to actually be effective. Two months of study later and the first magical spell to be cast in a thousand years was completed, a simple cantrip to ignite a latern that would pave the way for far grander things. It wasn't long before they began to discover other uses for this, an organized branch being formed for the study and resurrection of the ancient art of magic, a group that would eventually become known as the Magi so named after the title ancient mages once took on.

Magic was clunky. It required focus, time, often bizarre materials and no small amount of preparation. But it could do wonderful things, seemingly in defiance of the laws of reality as they were understood, and with this power on their side the tide of the war rapidly shifted and it was not long before Zen Dynamics stood victorious, the Denestvian government reduced to a vestigial state with the Directors of Zen Dynamics assuming true power. But that wasn't the end of things, if anything it was merely the beginning. To put it simply, the war had taken a terrible toll on resources with many sources of easily accessible energy beginning to simply run out entirely, which helped drive research into the concept of if a viable source of magical energy could somehow be harnessed. It wasn't long before they found their answer.

An Endlessly Renewable Source Of Energy - What Could Go Wrong:

Important Name: Extradimensional Generator = A safe, clean and reliable source of infinite energy with absolutely no drawbacks whatsoever! Really. We promise.

The solution probably sounded insane at first. There were theories of course that worlds other than this one existed, but the first one to actually be discovered was slightly more extreme than expected. A universe that as far as anybody was able to tell, was essentially an entire dimension of nothing but nonstop explosions being fueled by an entirely unknown source, and it was an especially eccentric Magi who came up with the idea to attempt to harness this. Through careful control of portals tied to this dimension, they could harness the sheer kinetic force behind these explosions into a tangible source of energy, one that would theoretically only be limited by their control of the portals and the generators designed to harness this energy.

The initial tests were perilous to put it lightly, more than a few worryingly large blasts were attributed to this research but it ultimately proved to be worth it as a new kind of magical generator was developed which paved the way to an effectively endlessly renewable source of power. If there were any doubts as to Zen Dynamics authority left, they were squashed when they were the ones to solve the energy crisis on top of everything else they'd accomplished so far. What could possibly throw a wrench in it all? They seemed on top of the world coming off of multiple historical successes, a period of time that would surely cement their name in history. Furthermore, with the knowledge that other universes exist came the theory that other worlds might exist out there with some manner of life upon them, other realities similar enough to their own to support their own civilizations, their own life and history. Something perhaps worth looking into, another step forwards.

And then they came.

Nightmares - What Do You Mean Our Neighbors Aren't Friendly:

Important Name: Nightmares = Actually Literally Monsters That Will Eat Your Children

As it turns out, tunneling random portals into the fabric of space and time with only a vague idea of what you're doing is a bit like drilling holes into your wall at random and hoping you don't hit anything too terribly important. And when you do hit something important, well...

There's a number of theories on what exactly happened, if the boundaries between dimensions simply weakened enough to let something through from a third universe or if this universe populated entirely by endless explosions happened to also be populated by horrors from beyond the veil but regardless of the how or the why, the important thing is that it did happen. Something not of this world came through, a critter a little less than half the size of a human, made of a strange mix of what seemed to be darkness and some kind of magical energy. Was it sentient? Friendly? Simply wandering on its own or part of something greater? The first question remains something of a mystery but the next two were answered swiftly when it proceeded to devour the first human it came across, and upon being put down was promptly followed by several more before the Magi. were able to close the rogue portal. A tragic accident, but hopefully that would be that and the public had no need to know of what happened.

And then it happened again. And again. And again once more, all in different places and with a greater variety of the creatures to boot, all heavily resistant against conventional arms and all hostile. These creatures would become known as Nightmares, a fitting name for the realization that the treasured source of limitless energy now carried with it a steep price, the very same means of accessing it paving the way for otherworldly horrors to enter their own world. This created no small amount of controversy, was this really a price worth paying for energy? But having grown reliant upon this source of power and with other measures lacking or simply exhausted entirely to simply shut the generators down altogether would create an enormous crisis, and what was to say the monsters would even stop at that point? It was entirely possible that the damage had already been done and they would need to find another way to stop them.

With Nightmare attacks on the rise and the monsters growing ever larger and more destructive, it seemed the world was poised to enter a new age of darkness...

Beginning of the End - Ah Crap It's All Going Wrong:

Things got pretty ugly for a while, an armed subdivision of the Magi was created with the hopes of developing and using magically enhanced arms that would be capable of fighting against Nightmares but only with limited success, battles often proving to be costly both in terms of resources as well as lives. Though enhanced munitions were reasonably effective against Nightmares compared to mundane means, there were still few ways of keeping pace with their supernatural strength or agility and magic was by and far a clunky tool to try to use in a fight, actual spells being ill-suited for the frantic pace of a pitched battle. Efforts to streamline magic into something more suitable for combat were largely a failure, either failing to produce a useful spell or bypassing too many safety measures, resulting in more than one Magi simply frying themselves with their own power. To make matters worse, even in places that had begun to scale down their reliance on the Extradimensional Generators attacks had not abated, cementing the idea that it was too late to simply cut off the threat by shutting down the generators.

It wasn't mass panic and chaos yet, though it did add another layer of fear to a society already sharply divided by class and wealth, despair taking root in many of the bleaker corners of society. Doomsaying, preachers claiming the apocalypse was upon them and a slowly growing sense of hopelessness began to become more and more commonplace. The rich began to gather resources, some seeking to have vast underground shelters built where they would theoretically wait this out, the poor simply huddled together and hoped something, anything would stop what was happening.

And then one day everything changed.

The First Mahou - And Then It Stopped Getting Worse:

Important Name: Mahou = Those chosen by a mysterious power to fight against Nightmares, gifted with the ability to naturally wield magic far beyond human limitations. The true origin of this power remains a mystery.

August 7th, 20XX - 7:53 PM Central Denestvian Time. The Magi detected an enormous portal- almost more of a flat out tear in reality itself as what could only be described as the king of all Nightmares simply tore a path into the universe and appeared, accompanied by a not insignificantly sized vangard in what many would speculate was proof of Nightmare sentience, something closer to an organized invasion than a simple monster attack, centered around a monster quite literally the size of a building with defenses thick enough to render it seemingly impervious to even the enhanced weaponry of the Magi. What ensued was, to date, the single largest battle against a Nightmare incursion ever and the first to approach what most people picture when they think of a full blown war. Despite scrambling everything they had and with full backing of the central armed forces, the Magi were simply unable to deal with a threat of that scale and were unable to keep it from approaching a densely populated city, one that simply hadn't had enough time to attempt a full scale evacuation. With the situation looking bleak, the entire country braced itself for what was likely to be one of the greatest disasters of the modern era, the potential loss of an entire city...

But that's not what happened.

Those present must have thought it to be madness, a young girl stepping forth alone through the chaos seemingly intent on staring down a monster a thousand times her size, dressed in a brightly colored frilly outfit that wouldn't have been out of place at some kind of a convention. Hardly old enough to be a soldier and hardly equipped for any sort of battle, death seemed a certainty as a horde of smaller Nightmares descended upon her...

... and were promptly cut to ribbons by a blade of shimmering crystal, expertly wielded and seemingly capable of piercing their defenses effortlessly. With that the battle was joined by this mysterious heroine, and for the first time? It was humanity who held the upper hand. The titanic Nightmare was slow and plodding, built to simply trample through anything in its path shrug off nearly any level of mundane firepower, using sheer bulk to shrug off the limited magical power being leveled at it. But its defenses were not built to deal with a high powered magical threat and it was a mere minute or two before it was cut down entirely. And in the wake of the battle it was clear something incredible had just happened.

A human with the ability to use magic as easily as most people breathe, and at a far greater scale as well. She herself didn't know how she'd attained this power, by her own account it had simply awakened during the chaos and destruction, a sense of power and a need to make things right boiling over until it triggered some kind of transformation.

The first Mahou had awakened and things were never going to be the same again.

The Rise Of Mahou - Oh Crap They Don't Have To Be Goodguys:

Nobody was entirely sure what to make of this, a mysterious girl with the power to defeat Nightmares was the sort of thing that sounded like it was straight out of a fairy tale, but many applauded her as a hero. In the upper echelons of society though, some worried. Somebody with that kind of power could be a potential threat as well, with much of society feeling more than a little oppressed and the massive imbalance of power towards the rich and powerful, if she were to turn on them... that could cause problems. After all, someone that powerful would be incredibly difficult to stop conventionally.

Things rapidly grew more complicated from here though as others soon followed, what was initially the rise of the First Mahou was swiftly followed by others awakening to a similar power, equally capable of fighting back Nightmares. This surge of renewed hope wasn't all sunshine and rainbows though, as it seemed there was little rhyme or reason to who was chosen. Men and women alike of all ages and backgrounds, and an equally diverse range of motivations to come with them. With time, a sole unifying factor was discovered... Hope. They all hoped for something, and that hope seemed to be what fueled their power. Some hoped for a better world for the downtrodden and hopeless, some hoped they could save those who couldn't save themselves, some hoped for a world free of the Nightmares.

Others were driven for themselves. Hoping for a better future for themselves, to rise in society and seek wealth and fame far beyond anything they could have hoped for before. To be rich and famous, to be heroes adored by the masses, to even rise above the Mega Corps and their all-encompassing grasp upon the world. And others still, well...

It's a simple fact money buys loyalty in many circles, and for that among other reasons there were those who chose to wield their power for the likes of Zen Dynamics and others, either seeing working with the system and the Magi as the most effective way of dealing with Nightmares or simply because they were fascinated by just how many zeroes Zen Dynamics could put on a check, others still believing in the need for the masses to be controlled, kept down so that the good and the great had the authority they need to continue driving society forwards.

Present Time - An Uneasy Balance, But At Least We're Not Getting Eaten Anymore (Mostly):

And that brings us to the situation right now! Nightmares still exist, by no means has that threat vanished although now there exist those who can fight them. But the world is still a tense place, with Mahou existing on all sides fighting for all reasons there exists an uneasy balance between the common masses and the upper classes, those who live in sprawling slums and run down streets and those who call the multi-hundred story tall pristine skyscrapers home. Many would like to rise up, many would prefer to keep them down and the rise of Mahou has only added to the tension. They're powerful, incredibly so and exceedingly difficult to take down with conventional means alone. And with there being those who have no issue seeing their power as proof of their superiority over those beneath them, for some it's simply another measure of control over others. With so little truly understood about them, many continue to feel uneasy about their existence and what it could truly mean...

... but just as many continue to see them as heroes, those who rise up and refuse to let the world simply be destroyed by an unfathomable evil, those who choose to use their power to aid those without, those willing to keep those without restraint in check. Some of these would-be "heroes" rise to positions to fame and power, renowned for showing up to dramatically take down the latest Nightmare to threaten civilization, effectively becoming celebrities even as they seek to further their own wealth and power. Others work more quietly, preferring to avoid the spotlight and the glamour of the high-flying heroic life. Others still wait in the shadows, seeking the right time to rise bring this corrupt society crashing down or to sweep away the lesser filth entirely...

One thing's for sure though. Nobody can say it's a boring time to be alive.

Because it's nice to have a quick rundown on an OC without having to go through a billion words of worldbuilding. So I'll try to keep it somewhere under a million! (No promises.)

The Setting:
Cramming magical boys/girls into a dystopian hellscape, because I'm wild like that.

Think if a vaguely Shadowrun-esque dystopia got flipped upside down by the sudden re-discovery of magic and a mad scheme to use controlled portals to an alternate universe where everything is an endless series of explosions as a form of energy generation to solve an energy crisis. Surly nothing could go wrong with that, right? And then came monsters called Nightmares (not the most original name, but fancy names weren't really the first thing on their mind when they encountered them) who didn't much care for all these little holes being poked in spacetime and decided to come say hi and chill and maybe devour humanity while they're at it.

That's bad!

So the mega-corporations racked their brains, came to the conclusion that getting devoured would be pretty bad for their bottom line and decided to try shooting them with a whole lot of different guns which worked for a little while until bigger, nastier monsters that didn't give a shit about bullets started appearing. So they tried harnessing magical guns, which worked better! Except magic is clunky and difficult to wield, therefore the production of magical weapons and munitions is time consuming and complicated. That's a problem! And then things got a little bit strange when somebody suddenly turned up with incredible magical powers and the ability to fight Nightmares on equal footing. It was some crazy anime shit, you had to be there.

This marked the rise of the first Mahou, individuals granted the gift of being able to wield magic as naturally as most people breathe and also the ability to do cool things like flip through the air and shoot magic at monsters and be worryingly hard to kill by most conventional methods. And it's all fueled by the power of hope! (No literally, that's what makes magic be more better good.) It's a pretty sweet deal! They're basically magical girls (And boys too). In fact, that's literally what they are, fancy outfits and all. Let's be real, this is a pretty sweet gig in a world where everything is controlled with an iron fist by the impossibly wealthy and powerful hyper-elite. Which brings me to the one small problem with this.

See, nobody actually knows what's granting people this power and whatever it is really doesn't seem to be too picky either, there aren't any rules saying a Mahou has to fight for justice or love or any of that good stuff. "Hope" is a fairly nebulous thing, "I want to make the world a better place where people don't live in constant fear and oppression" is obviously pretty legit but "I want to swim in a pool of money and have my own thirty person harem" will do just as well. And with that kind of power, rising up in society isn't nearly as difficult as it is for people who still have to worry about pesky things like 'mortal limits'.

Even for the ones fighting for what they see as justice, there's nothing saying they need to be polite about it, if they wanted to alternate between using their powers to stop monsters and go about blowing up skyscrapers there really isn't a whole lot stopping them except other people powerful enough to put a stop to that, which has created an entirely new power dynamic for society to deal with. Having a handful of crazy powerful superpeople running around fighting monsters but also each other certainly ramps up the tension, some Mahou fight for the system, some fight against it, others still simply don't give a crap and try to stay out of the way. What one actually does with their power is really more or less up to them.

Nobody's burned down a city yet, for what that's worth, so they're collectively doing something right at least!

The Character - Background:

Which brings us to Our Hero(TM) right here, a boy from an almost well off military family who's parents were employed in one of the many mega-corps private security forces with a largely unremarkable childhood. Also one of the first Mahou to awaken, so I guess that's not quite so unremarkable. Keeping something of a lower profile than the others who'd call themselves Mahou, the boy who became known as Reverie preferred to keep himself out of the high-flying monster-slaying spotlight as well as reasonably distant from the ongoing politics, instead electing to focus his talents on simply helping those who'd fallen through the cracks, the ones unnoticed and insignificant in the bigger picture, gifted with the magical ability to mend wounds and heal the sick. Something not as well suited for a direct battle, but perfect for what he felt strongly about, helping those who had nobody else to turn to.

The Character - Personality:

Growing up, Reverie always knew he wanted to help people, even if exactly how to do that eluded him. His parents knew the corporations were anything but helpful, anything but caring about those beneath them and yet they'd both signed up for the various security organizations in hopes of doing what little they could to help others and maybe make the world a slightly less terrible place. If they got lucky, maybe they could even try to do something from within the system, change it from within yanno? A fools wish to some, but something they hoped for nonetheless. So when these powers awoke within him there was no real question as to what he wanted to do with them.

Of course it's often not that simple and the fact is? It's kind of a shitty world. People can and will be awful to each other for incredibly petty reasons, many of those with power simply don't care about those beneath them (or even really anybody other than themselves) and this isn't a world that lends itself well to such an idealistic approach. As a result, Reverie's worldview is decidedly a bit more jaded than your average wide-eyed "I'm going to be a hero" sort, even if he tries to cling to his ideals regardless. Still driven to help people, still a firm believer that he's doing the right thing but always expecting the worse. The way he sees it people aren't inherently good and in fact, most people can really kind of suck. Still, that makes a crappy excuse to not at least try, many of these people have reasons for acting the way they do after all and if he simply stood by and did nothing that wouldn't exactly be helping. And maybe one guy can't save the world, but if you save the life of a person, didn't you save their world? And at the end of the day, that's something he can still be proud of.

That realization that the world is anything but a friendly and happy place doesn't stop him from being a bit too curious for his own good either, even in an era as tragic and complicated as this there's still fantastic things out there, to say nothing of the mysteries surrounding magic and the origin of their own powers, something many Mahou don't seem to regard as especially important. It's his hope that in keeping a lower profile he might just be able to focus more on discovering the truth rather than battling his way through the byzantine politics of the world he lives in.

Besides, there's more to the world than just this, and it isn't going to be discovered by just sitting around waiting for it, right?

The Character - Abilities:

So! Let's talk about magic for a moment shall we? All Mahou have a few basic tricks up their sleeves, they tend to generally be tougher than your average grade human for one thing and most notably, can wield magic about as easily as most people can breath or move a limb. This is notable given magic usually involves complicated, arcane rituals, exotic materials and the occasional blood sacrifice or two, so simply being able to wave his hand and make magic happen is kind of the big reason Mahou are equally looked up to and feared. And while it's entirely possible to develop new abilities with time, practice and the occasional moment of intoxicated inspiration most Mahou usually get some kind of unique gift based on what drives them in the first place, though it isn't always based on that and a creative mind can often wield powers in unusual ways.

Let's take Reverie's main trick for example here, the ability to heal people. On the surface it's pretty simple, wave his hands, make some glowy lights appear and he can do things like mend bones and knit flesh back together and make you feel just like you did before you drove that hovercycle through a store window while on a drunken bender! Fantastic stuff, really. It's also a hell of a lot meaner than that under the surface because healing isn't really the best way of describing his natural gift, it'd be far more proper to call it by its true name, Biomancy.

It's far more than merely the ability to make people feel good after they've felt bad, it's the ability to empower people, to make people stronger, tougher, faster. To generate redundant organs that sit idle until needed, a secondary heart in case your first one fails, an entire extra cardiovascular system waiting to kick in when something happens to your last one, an extra liver because you thought twelve glasses of hyper-proof liquor was a good idea at that party last night (it wasn't, and he's going to charge you for that brand new liver because that was dumb). And that's just the benevolent stuff.

It's equally useful on people he doesn't like because he's fully capable of switching the life-granting power into reverse, energy that commands biological matter and cells to start dying left right and center, literal lasers of pure rot, the power to create super-viruses that are nigh-untreatable with conventional methods that spread as aggressively as any other, or to simply boost his own physical capabilities so he can punch an SOB out that much better than he normally could, because for all the complexities of the world he might live in Mr. Haymaker knows how to put an end to an argument quite like no other. Most of which are powers he doesn't especially feel good about using, but nonetheless remain up his sleeve just in case, because the most useful weapon is the one your enemy doesn't know you have or something equally deep and wise sounding. He's not really a fighter by nature, but knowing how to fuck someone up when they don't know you can do that seems handy, right?

Beyond that he's also not a bad fighter in general, being raised by military parents meant having half an idea how to defend himself from a pretty young age just in case, and being raised by military parents who were actually really good at their jobs meant having a decent sense of awareness about dangerous situations and how to be creative to gain the upper hand, because at the end of the day all your ideals don't mean a whole hell of a lot if you're dead, a simple truth he's taken to heart even with his quiet distaste for a lot of the pointless fighting going on in the world.
